Při příležitosti 75. narozenin Mendelova veterinární a farmaceutická univerzita v Brně udělila Vítězslavu Orlovi zlatou medaili za jeho „vynikající roli v podpoře genetiky na Veterinární fakultě“.

Během svého studia na Zemědělské vysoké škole v Brně v letech 1945–1949 byl Vítězslav Orel zaujat výukou genetiky křížení zvířat Jaroslava Kříženeckého (1896–1965). Když se ale po roce 1948 dostala genetika na index s hanlivým označením jako reakční věda, byla nahrazena pseudovědeckou výukou dědičnosti získaných vlastností, násilně k nám zavedenou ze SSSR. Kříženecký byl z vysoké školy propuštěn a dokonce na dva roky uvězněn. Orel získal zaměstnání v nově založeném Výzkumném ústavu drůbežářského průmyslu. Za těchto okolností uvítal externí spolupráci s MVDr. Bedřichem Klimešem (1926–1982), vedoucím nově ustaveného ústavu pro choroby drůbeže na Veterinární fakultě. V roce 1963, kdy byl Kříženecký pověřen obnovením Mendelova muzea v Brně, jím nazvaným Mendelianum, pozval Orla, aby se podílel na rehabilitaci genetiky tím, že bude studovat historii Mendelova objevu. Orlova externí spolupráce s Klimešem ve výzkumu dědičnosti chorob drůbeže pokračovala a Veterinární fakulta schválila v roce 1968 jeho habilitační práci a udělila mu titul docent. Během normalizace po Pražském jaru 1968 tato spolupráce skončila a Orel se ve vědecké práci soustředil na historický výzkum původu a počátečního vývoje genetiky v Mendelianu. V roce 2002 jeho účast na práci Historické sekce Společnosti veterinárních lékařů vedla ke zveřejnění seznamu 378 Orlových prací a knih od roku 1948 do roku 2002 pod názvem Od pěstování drůbeže k Mendelovi a dějinám genetiky. Polovina jeho publikací vyšla v deseti jazycích, většinou v němčině nebo (zejména) v angličtině.

Po roce 1992 odešel V. Orel do důchodu a pokračoval ve své historické práci a v publikační činnosti doma. Při příležitosti jeho 80. narozenin Mendelova veterinární a farmaceutická univerzita vydává seznam vybraných Orlových prací vydaných po roce 1992 a zaměřených především na osvětlení Mendelova objevu.

Selected publications by Vítězslav Orel after 1992. To his 80th birthday

On the occasion of his 75th birthday the Veterinary and Pharmaceutical University in Brno awarded Vítězslav Orel its Golden medal for his “prominent role in the furtherance of genetics at the Veterinary Faculty”. While studying at the Agricultural University in Brno in 1945–1949, Vítězslav Orel was captivated by the teaching of genetics in animal breeding by Jaroslav Kříženecký (1896–1965).

However, in 1948 in the land that was then Czechoslovakia, genetics was stigmatized as a reactionary science and replaced by the pseudoscientific teaching of heredity of acquired characteristics, forcibly introduced from the Soviet Union. Kříženecký was dismissed from the university and even for two years arrested. Orel found a post in the newly established Research Institute of Poultry Industry. In this context he welcomed the external cooperation with Bedřich Klimeš, MVDr (1926–1982), Head of the newly established Institute of Poultry Diseases at the Veterinary Faculty. In 1963, when Kříženecký was entrusted with the renovation of Mendel museum in Brno, named by him Mendelianum, he invited Orel to partner in the rehabilitation of genetics through the historical investigation of Mendel’s discovery. Orel’s external cooperation with Klimeš in the research of heredity in the poultry diseases continued, and in 1968 the faculty approved his “habilitation” thesis as the lecturer. In “political normalization era”, after Prague Spring in 1968, this cooperation ended and Orel centered his scientific endeavor upon historical investigation of the origin and early development of genetics in the Mendelianum. In 2002 his participation with the Historical Section of the Veterinary Surgeons Society led to the publishing a list of Orel’s 378 papers and books from 1948 to 2002 under the title From Poultry Breeding to Mendel and History of Genetics. The half of his publications appeared in ten foreign languages, mostly in German and in English in the particular.

After 1992 Orel retired and continued his historical investigation and publishing activities working at home. On the occasion of his 80th birthday the Veterinary and Pharmaceutical University is publishing the list of Orel’s selected publications after 1992 aimed mostly to the elucidation of Mendel’s discovery within the concept of science studies.
